82 % Of School Districts Will Cut or Eliminate Jobs in 2010-11

American Association of School Administrators Reports Eighty Two Percent

Of School Districts Will Cut or Eliminate 27,516 Education Jobs in 2010-11

The American Association of School Administrators (AASA) recently conducted a survey of 1,479 school districts. These school districts represent about 11% of the total districts in the country. In addition to 82% of the districts saying they will cut or eliminate jobs in 2010-11, 53 % of the LEAs that responded indicated they will freeze hiring. The survey also indicated that the student ratios nationwide will increase from 15:1 to 17:1.

The House passed a bill mid-year entitle the Jobs for Main Street Act (H.R 2847), and the Senate Appropriations Committee’s Labor-HHS Education Panel introduced a bill in April.  That bill, Keep Our Educators Working Act (S.3206), is similar to the House bill and would save approximately 100,000 education jobs funded by the Stimulus Funds.

US Secretary of Education Duncan has promoted additional funding. AASA estimates the total education job reductions would be around 275, 000 which means the 300,000 added as a result of stimulus funds would be a wash.
